Amanita velosa[edit]

Amanita velosa in Santa Cruz

Amanita velosa is a species of mushroom in the Amanitaceae family. It is known for its distinctive appearance and is considered a choice edible mushroom by foragers. This species is found primarily in the coastal regions of California and is associated with oak and conifer trees.

Description[edit]

Amanita velosa is characterized by its smooth, pale cap that ranges in color from pinkish to pale orange. The cap is typically 5 to 15 cm in diameter and is convex to flat in shape. The gills are free from the stipe and are white to cream in color.

The stipe is slender and tapers towards the base, measuring 8 to 20 cm in height. It is white and may have a slight pinkish hue. The volva is sack-like and remains at the base of the stipe, a key identifying feature of this species.

Habitat and Distribution[edit]

Amanita velosa is found in mycorrhizal association with hardwoods, particularly oaks, and sometimes with conifers. It is commonly found in the coastal regions of California, especially during the rainy season from late fall to early spring.

Edibility[edit]

Amanita velosa is considered a choice edible mushroom, highly prized by mushroom foragers. However, caution is advised as it can be easily confused with other toxic species of Amanita, such as Amanita phalloides and Amanita ocreata. Proper identification is crucial before consumption.

Similar Species[edit]

Amanita velosa can be confused with other Amanita species, particularly those in the section Phalloideae, which contain deadly toxins. It is important to note the absence of an annulus and the presence of a volva to distinguish A. velosa from its toxic relatives.
