Dongfang Meiren has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It is said to have been developed in the Hsinchu and Miaoli regions of Taiwan. The tea gained international fame when it was presented to Queen Elizabeth II, who reportedly named it "Oriental Beauty" due to its exquisite taste and appearance.

Production

The production of Dongfang Meiren is unique and labor-intensive. The tea leaves are harvested during the summer months when the tea green leafhopper (Jacobiasca formosana) is active. These insects feed on the leaves, causing a natural oxidation process that contributes to the tea's distinctive flavor.

The leaves are then withered, rolled, and oxidized to a degree that is higher than most other oolongs, but less than black tea. This careful processing results in a tea that has a complex flavor profile, often described as fruity, honey-like, and floral.
