Mechanism of Action

Pyrantel acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent in susceptible parasites. It causes a depolarizing neuromuscular blockade, leading to spastic paralysis of the worm. This paralysis allows the host's natural peristaltic action to expel the worm from the gastrointestinal tract.

Uses

Pyrantel is commonly used to treat infections caused by:

• Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm)
• Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm)
• Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworms)

Administration

Pyrantel is administered orally, often in the form of a pyrantel pamoate suspension or tablet. The dosage is typically based on the patient's weight and the type of infection being treated.

Side Effects

Common side effects of pyrantel may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal cramps

Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, and swelling.

Precautions
