Akrotiri and Dhekelia
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two British Overseas Territories located on the island of Cyprus. These territories are known as the Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) and are retained by the United Kingdom for military purposes. The areas serve as strategic military bases and are home to various military and civilian facilities.
Geography[edit]
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are situated on the southern coast of Cyprus. Akrotiri is located to the southwest of the island, near the city of Limassol, while Dhekelia is located to the southeast, near the city of Larnaca. The territories cover a combined area of approximately 254 square kilometers.
History[edit]
The Sovereign Base Areas were established in 1960 when Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom. The Treaty of Establishment allowed the UK to retain these areas for military purposes. The SBAs have been used for various military operations and training exercises over the years.
Administration[edit]
The SBAs are administered by the UK Ministry of Defence. The territories have their own legal system, which is separate from that of Cyprus. The Sovereign Base Areas Administration is responsible for the governance of the areas, including law enforcement and public services.
Military Significance[edit]
Akrotiri and Dhekelia are strategically important for the UK and its allies. The bases provide a platform for military operations in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. The Royal Air Force operates from RAF Akrotiri, which is a key installation for air operations.
Economy[edit]
The economy of the SBAs is primarily driven by the presence of the military. There are also civilian communities within the territories, and some local businesses operate to support the needs of the residents and military personnel.
Culture and Community[edit]
The SBAs have a diverse community, including military personnel, their families, and local Cypriots. The areas have schools, churches, and recreational facilities to support the community.
