Hoppang
Hoppang is a popular South Korean brand of pre-packaged steamed buns, known as jjinppang in Korean. The brand is owned by the Samyang Foods company. Hoppang was first introduced in 1971 and has since become a staple food item in South Korea, especially during the winter months.
History
The Hoppang brand was launched by Samyang Foods in 1971. The name "Hoppang" is a portmanteau of the Korean words ho (meaning 'to preserve') and ppang (meaning 'bread'). The brand was created as a response to the increasing demand for convenient, ready-to-eat meals in South Korea during the 1970s.
Preparation and Consumption
Hoppang is typically steamed before consumption, which can be done using a microwave or a steamer. The buns are pre-packaged and can be stored at room temperature, making them a convenient food option. The traditional filling for Hoppang is red bean paste, but other varieties include vegetable, pizza, and sweet potato fillings.
Cultural Significance
Hoppang has become a cultural icon in South Korea, particularly associated with the winter season. The warm, steamed buns are a popular street food and are often sold by vendors in portable steamers. Hoppang is also commonly found in convenience stores across the country.
