USA Network is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming division of Comcast. The network was originally launched in 1977 as the "Madison Square Garden Sports Network," and it was later rebranded as "USA Network" in 1980. USA Network is known for its broad range of programming, including original series, acquired television series, and feature films.
History
USA Network was founded in 1977 as a joint venture between UA-Columbia Cablevision and the Madison Square Garden Corporation. Initially, the network focused on sports programming, including coverage of the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association. In 1980, the network was rebranded as "USA Network" and began to diversify its programming to include entertainment content.
In the 1980s and 1990s, USA Network expanded its programming to include a mix of original series, syndicated reruns, and movies. The network became known for its "USA Up All Night" programming block, which featured cult films and B-movies.
In 2004, USA Network was acquired by NBCUniversal, which led to a significant increase in the production of original programming. The network launched several successful original series, including "Monk", "Psych", "Burn Notice", and "Suits".
