Belizean Americans
Belizean Americans[edit]
Belizean Americans are Americans who are of Belizean ancestry. Belizean Americans are a part of the larger Caribbean American community in the United States. They have a rich cultural heritage that reflects the diverse ethnic composition of Belize, including Mestizo, Creole, Maya, Garifuna, and other ethnic groups.
History[edit]
The migration of Belizeans to the United States began in the early 20th century, with significant increases during the 1960s and 1970s. Many Belizeans moved to the U.S. in search of better economic opportunities and to escape political instability. The largest wave of migration occurred after Hurricane Hattie in 1961, which devastated much of Belize.
Demographics[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 60,000 Belizean Americans living in the United States. The largest populations are found in Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, and Miami.
Culture[edit]
Belizean Americans maintain strong cultural ties to Belize, celebrating traditional holidays such as Garifuna Settlement Day and Belize Independence Day. They also enjoy Belizean cuisine, which includes dishes like rice and beans, stew chicken, and fry jacks.
Language[edit]
English is the official language of Belize, and most Belizean Americans are fluent in English. However, many also speak Kriol, a creole language that is widely spoken in Belize.
Religion[edit]
The majority of Belizean Americans are Christians, with Roman Catholicism and Protestantism being the most common denominations. There are also smaller communities of Hindus and Muslims among Belizean Americans.
Notable Belizean Americans[edit]
- Shyne - Rapper and politician, known for his work in the music industry and his political career in Belize.
- Marion Jones - Former world champion track and field athlete, known for her achievements in the Olympics.
Organizations[edit]
Several organizations support the Belizean American community, including the Belizean American Chamber of Commerce and the Belizean American Association. These organizations promote cultural exchange and provide resources for Belizeans in the U.S.
