The University of Leuven (Dutch: Universiteit Leuven, Latin: Universitas Lovaniensis), located in Leuven, Belgium, is the country's largest and highest-ranked university as well as one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe. Established in 1425, it is often considered the oldest Catholic university still in existence, though it has been a secular institution since 1970.

History

The University of Leuven was founded on December 9, 1425, by Pope Martin V. It quickly grew in importance and size, becoming one of the leading universities in Europe during the Renaissance period.
