Chester County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,294. The county seat is Chester. The county was formed in 1785 and is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area.

History

Chester County was formed in 1785 as part of the larger Camden District. It was named after Chester, Pennsylvania, which was the home of many of the early settlers. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 581 square miles (1,504 km²), of which 580 square miles (1,502 km²) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) (0.2%) is water.

The racial makeup of the county was 60.1% White, 36.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
