Chester County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,294. The county seat is Chester. The county was formed in 1785 and is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area.

History[edit]

Chester County was formed in 1785 as part of the larger Camden District. It was named after Chester, Pennsylvania, which was the home of many of the early settlers. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 581 square miles (1,504 km²), of which 580 square miles (1,502 km²) is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) (0.2%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 32,294 people, 12,456 households, and 8,456 families residing in the county. The population density was 55.7 inhabitants per square mile (21.5/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 60.1% White, 36.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

The economy of Chester County is diverse, with key industries including manufacturing, agriculture, and retail. The county is also home to several large employers, including Giti Tire and Carolina Poly.

Chester County is served by the Chester County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to the Chester Center of York Technical College.
