Hofstra University is a private university in Hempstead, New York. It was founded in 1935 as an extension of New York University (NYU) and became an independent institution in 1939. The university is known for its liberal arts and sciences programs, as well as its law school and medical school.
History
Hofstra University was established in 1935 on the estate of wealthy lumber magnate William S. Hofstra and his wife, Kate Mason Hofstra. Initially, it served as an extension of New York University and was known as "Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island." In 1939, it became an independent institution and was renamed Hofstra College. It achieved university status in 1963.
