Wrestling (pronunciation: /ˈrɛs(ə)lɪŋ/) is a combat sport involving grappling-type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. The sport can either be theatrical for entertainment (see professional wrestling), or genuinely competitive.

Etymology

The term wrestling is of Old English origin, derived from the verb wrǣstlian, meaning "to grapple or struggle."

  • Grappling: A general term that covers techniques used in many disciplines, styles and martial arts that are practiced both as combat sports and for self-defense. Grappling most commonly does not include striking or the use of weapons.
  • Professional wrestling: A form of wrestling that combines athletics with theatrical performance. It takes the form of events, held by touring companies, which mimic a title-match combat sport.
  • Amateur wrestling: A variant of wrestling practiced at the collegiate and secondary school levels in the United States. This style, with modifications, is also practiced at the high school and middle school levels, and also among younger participants.

  • Judo: A modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground.
  • Jiu-Jitsu: A martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting.
  • Sumo: A competitive full-contact wrestling sport where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring or into touching the ground with any body part other than the soles of his feet.
