Albany County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 census, the population was 37,608. The county seat and largest city is Laramie. The county was created on December 16, 1868, from Laramie County in the Dakota Territory and organized in 1869.

History[edit]

Albany County was created on December 16, 1868, by the Dakota Territory legislature. The county was named for Albany, New York, the capital of the state of New York, from which early settlers hailed. The county was organized in 1869.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,309 square miles (11,160 km²), of which 4,274 square miles (11,070 km²) is land and 35 square miles (91 km²) (0.8%) is water.

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 37,608 people, 15,215 households, and 7,528 families residing in the county. The population density was 8.8 people per square mile (3.4/km²). There were 17,939 housing units at an average density of 4.2 per square mile (1.6/km²).
