Torrington is a city in Goshen County, Wyoming, United States. It is the county seat of Goshen County. The city is located in the southeastern part of the state, near the Nebraska border. As of the 2020 census, the population of Torrington was 6,501.
History
Torrington was founded in 1900 by W.G. Curtis and named after his hometown of Torrington, Connecticut. The city grew rapidly with the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1900, which provided a significant boost to the local economy. Torrington was incorporated as a city in 1908.
Geography
Torrington is situated at an elevation of 4,104 feet (1,251 meters) above sea level. The city covers a total area of 4.62 square miles (11.97 km²), all of it land. Torrington is located near the North Platte River, which provides water for irrigation and other uses.
Climate
Torrington has a semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSk), characterized by cold winters and hot summers. Precipitation is relatively low, with most of it occurring during the spring and early summer months.
Economy
The economy of Torrington is primarily based on agriculture, with a focus on livestock and crop production. The city is home to the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution, which is a significant employer in the area. Additionally, Torrington hosts the annual Goshen County Fair, which attracts visitors from across the region.
Education
Torrington is served by Goshen County School District #1, which includes Torrington High School, Torrington Middle School, and several elementary schools. The city is also home to Eastern Wyoming College, a community college that offers a variety of academic and vocational programs.
Transportation
Torrington is accessible via U.S. Route 26 and U.S. Route 85, which intersect in the city. The Torrington Municipal Airport provides general aviation services to the area.
