Salt Lake County, Utah is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,185,238, making it the most populous county in Utah. The county seat and largest city is Salt Lake City, which is also the state capital.

History[edit]

Salt Lake County was founded on January 31, 1850, as part of the Territory of Utah. The county was named after the Great Salt Lake, which is located to the northwest of the county. The area was originally settled by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1847, led by Brigham Young.

Geography[edit]

Salt Lake County is situated in the north-central part of Utah. It is bordered by Davis County to the north, Tooele County to the west, Utah County to the south, and Summit County to the east. The county covers an area of approximately 807 square miles (2,090 km²).

The county is characterized by its diverse geography, which includes the Wasatch Range to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. The Jordan River flows northward through the center of the county, providing a natural corridor for transportation and development.
