Erie County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 270,876. The county seat is Erie. The county was created on March 12, 1800, from part of Allegheny County.
Geography[edit]
Erie County is situated along the southern shore of Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes. The county has a total area of 1,558 square miles, of which 799 square miles is land and 759 square miles (48.7%) is water. The county is part of the Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 270,876 people, 103,925 households, and 66,676 families residing in the county. The population density was 339 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 85.7% White, 7.1% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.1% of the population.
Government and politics[edit]
Erie County is governed by a county executive and a seven-member county council. The county is represented in the Pennsylvania General Assembly by three state representatives and one state senator. Federally, it is part of Pennsylvania's 16th congressional district.

The economy of Erie County is diverse, with major industries including manufacturing, healthcare, education, and tourism. The presence of Lake Erie provides opportunities for shipping and fishing industries. The county is also home to several higher education institutions, including Penn State Behrend and Gannon University.
