Country in North Africa
Libya (Arabic: ليبيا ) is a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The capital and largest city is Tripoli. Libya has the 16th largest proven oil reserves in the world.
History
Libya has a rich history dating back to the ancient Berber civilizations. It was part of the Roman Empire and later the Ottoman Empire. In the 20th century, Libya was an Italian colony until it gained independence in 1951. The country was ruled by Muammar Gaddafi from 1969 until 2011, when he was overthrown during the Libyan Civil War.
Geography
Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area and the 16th largest in the world. It is mostly covered by the Libyan Desert, which is part of the larger Sahara Desert. The country has a Mediterranean coastline that stretches for about 1,770 kilometers.
Politics
Libya is currently governed by a provisional government. The political situation has been unstable since the 2011 civil war, with various factions vying for control. The Government of National Unity is the internationally recognized government.
Economy
Libya's economy is heavily dependent on oil. The country has the largest oil reserves in Africa and the 16th largest in the world. Other sectors include agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, although these are less developed.
Demographics
The population of Libya is approximately 6.8 million. The majority of the population is of Arab-Berber descent. The official language is Arabic, and the predominant religion is Islam.
Culture
Libyan culture is a blend of Arab, Berber, and Mediterranean influences. Traditional music, dance, and cuisine are important aspects of Libyan culture. The country celebrates several national holidays, including Independence Day on December 24.
