Elias Zerhouni (born April 12, 1951) is an Algerian-American radiologist and biomedical researcher. He is best known for his work in biomedical imaging and for serving as the 15th Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2002 to 2008.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Elias Zerhouni was born in Nedroma, Algeria. He earned his medical degree from the University of Algiers in 1975. Following his graduation, he moved to the United States to complete his residency in radiology at Johns Hopkins University.
Career[edit]
Academic Career[edit]
Zerhouni joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins University in 1978, where he eventually became a full professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. He also served as the executive vice-dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
National Institutes of Health[edit]
In 2002, Zerhouni was appointed as the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by President George W. Bush. During his tenure, he launched the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, a series of initiatives designed to transform the way biomedical research is conducted.
Post-NIH Career[edit]
After leaving the NIH in 2008, Zerhouni joined Sanofi, a global pharmaceutical company, where he served as President of Global Research and Development. He has also been involved in various advisory roles and has served on numerous boards and committees.

Zerhouni is renowned for his contributions to the field of biomedical imaging. His research has led to significant advancements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scanning technologies.
