Italy, officially known as the Italian Republic (Repubblica Italiana), is a country located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Europe. It is a unitary parliamentary republic with Rome as its capital and largest city. Italy shares land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the enclaved microstates of Vatican City and San Marino. With around 60 million inhabitants, Italy is the fourth-most populous member state of the European Union.

History[edit]

The history of Italy is characterized by the Roman Empire's rise as a central power in the Mediterranean world. After the decline of the Roman Empire, Italy faced numerous invasions by foreign peoples. In the Middle Ages, Italy became a patchwork of city-states and kingdoms, which often fought against each other or were involved in complex alliances with European powers. The Renaissance began in Italy in the 14th century, leading to significant advances in art, science, and philosophy. Italy was unified in 1861, marking the establishment of the modern Italian state. The country played a central role in World War II and became a founding member of the European Union.
