Historically part of Westmorland, Kendal is known for its production of Kendal Mint Cake, a glucose-based confectionery reputed for its energy-giving properties, and its association with the outdoor activities, particularly hiking and mountaineering. The town's name comes from the Old Norse kirkja dalr, which means "valley of the church".
