Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech or IIT) is a private research university located in Chicago, Illinois. It was established in 1890 through the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute. Illinois Tech offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, applied technology, and law. One of its most notable features is its campus, which was partially designed by the famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who was also the head of the architecture school.

History[edit]

The history of Illinois Institute of Technology dates back to the late 19th century when the Armour Institute and the Lewis Institute were founded in 1890 and 1895, respectively. These two institutions merged in 1940 to form the Illinois Institute of Technology. The university played a significant role in the technological advancements of the 20th century, contributing to fields such as engineering, architecture, and computer science.

Campus[edit]

The main campus of Illinois Tech, known as the Mies Campus, is located in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago. It is renowned for its architecture, much of which was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The campus is a masterpiece of modernist architecture and includes the S.R. Crown Hall, which houses the College of Architecture.
