Anti-Shi'ism

Anti-Shi'ism is the prejudice, hatred of, discrimination, or aggression directed against Shia Muslims because of their religious beliefs, traditions, and cultural heritage. This form of sectarian violence has historical roots and has been manifested in various ways throughout centuries. Anti-Shi'ism can range from verbal abuse and social discrimination to violent attacks and systematic persecution.

History

The origins of Anti-Shi'ism can be traced back to the early days of Islam, following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The primary source of contention was over the rightful successor to Muhammad, leading to the division of Muslims into two main sects: the Sunni and the Shia. The Shia believed that Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, was the rightful successor, while the Sunnis supported the caliphate of Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and Uthman ibn Affan before Ali. Forms of Anti-Shi'ism
