== Anatomy ==
Anatomy is the branch of biology concerned with the study of the structure of organisms and their parts. It is a general term that includes human anatomy, animal anatomy (zootomy) and plant anatomy (phytotomy). In some of its facets, anatomy is related to embryology and comparative anatomy, which itself is closely related to evolutionary biology and phylogeny.
Human anatomy
Human anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body. It is a complex discipline, and following a systematic approach is crucial for understanding the many parts and systems that comprise the human body. The study of human anatomy is divided into macroscopic (or gross) anatomy and microscopic anatomy.
Gross anatomy
Gross anatomy (also called topographical anatomy, regional anatomy, or anthropotomy) is the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by the naked eye. Gross anatomy can be studied using both invasive and non-invasive methods with the goal of obtaining information about the macroscopic structure and organization of organs and organ systems.
Microscopic anatomy
Microscopic anatomy involves the use of optical instruments in the study of the tissues of various structures, known as histology, and also in the study of cells.
Comparative anatomy
Comparative anatomy is the study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of different species. It is closely related to evolutionary biology and phylogeny (the evolution of species).
Superficial anatomy
Superficial anatomy or surface anatomy is the study of the external features of the body. It deals mainly with the surfaces of the body that can be seen or felt.
Anatomical terminology
Anatomical terminology is used to describe microanatomical (or histological) structures. This helps ensure that ambiguity is prevented.
