The Bronx
The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, in the U.S. state of New York. It is south of Westchester County; north and east of the island and borough of Manhattan to the south and west across the Harlem River; and north of the borough of Queens, across the East River. The Bronx has a land area of 42 square miles (109 km2) and a population of 1,418,207 in 2019. Of the five boroughs, it has the fourth-largest area, fourth-highest population, and third-highest population density.
History
The Bronx was originally part of Westchester County but was gradually annexed by New York City. The Bronx was completely incorporated into the city in 1898. The Bronx was named for Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639.
Geography
The Bronx is the only borough of New York City that is mainly on the mainland. It is known for its large parks and open spaces, including Pelham Bay Park, Van Cortlandt Park, and the Bronx Zoo. The Bronx River flows south from Westchester County through the borough, emptying into the East River.
Culture
The Bronx is known for its rich culture, particularly in music and sports. It is the birthplace of hip hop music and is home to the New York Yankees, one of the most successful teams in Major League Baseball. The borough also has a strong literary tradition and is home to the Bronx Library Center, the largest public library in the Bronx.
Education
The Bronx is home to several institutions of higher education, including Fordham University, Manhattan College, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The New York City Department of Education operates public schools in the borough.
Transportation
The Bronx is served by multiple New York City Subway lines and bus routes. It is also home to several major highways, including the Bronx River Parkway, the Major Deegan Expressway, and the Cross Bronx Expressway.
