Kelupis
Kelupis is a traditional Borneon delicacy, specifically from the Brunei, Sabah, and Sarawak regions. It is a type of rice cake wrapped in leaves, typically served during festive occasions and celebrations.
Overview
Kelupis is made from glutinous rice that is soaked overnight, then cooked and wrapped in daun nyirik or daun palas (Licuala leaves). The wrapped rice is then boiled for several hours. The result is a compact, diamond-shaped rice cake that can be eaten on its own or served with other dishes, such as rendang or satay.
Cultural Significance
In Borneo, Kelupis is often served during special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and religious celebrations. It is considered a symbol of hospitality and is often given as a gift to guests. In addition, Kelupis is also used in traditional ceremonies and rituals.
Variations
There are several variations of Kelupis, depending on the region and the specific ingredients used. Some versions use different types of rice, while others may include additional ingredients such as coconut milk or sugar. The wrapping leaves can also vary, with some versions using banana leaves instead of Licuala leaves.
