The style originated in Detroit in 1946 at a restaurant called Buddy's Rendezvous, which later became Buddy's Pizza. The pizza was originally baked in blue steel pans, which were originally used to hold small parts in Detroit's auto factories.

Characteristics

Detroit-style pizza is unique in several ways. The crust is light and airy on the inside, similar to Sicilian pizza, but crispy on the outside.
