Parole

Parole is a temporary or permanent release of a prisoner before the completion of a sentence, on the promise of good behavior. History

The modern system of parole is often attributed to Alexander Maconochie, a British naval officer and penologist, who developed the "mark system" at the Norfolk Island penal colony in the 1840s.
