Butaperazine is a piperazine derivative and phenothiazine derivative that is used as an antipsychotic agent. It is classified as a typical antipsychotic and has properties similar to other drugs in this class, such as chlorpromazine and thioridazine.

Pharmacology

Butaperazine acts by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the brain, including D1 and D2 receptors. This results in an increase in the concentration of dopamine in the synaptic cleft, which can lead to a reduction in positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations and delusions.

Clinical Use

Butaperazine is used in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and acute mania. It can also be used to treat severe nausea and vomiting, as well as intractable hiccups.

Side Effects

Like other drugs in the phenothiazine class, butaperazine can cause a range of side effects. These can include sedation, weight gain, dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. More serious side effects can include tardive dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary movements, particularly of the face.

Contraindications

Butaperazine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other phenothiazines. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, liver disease, or glaucoma.
