Wax Lips

Wax lips are a type of novelty candy that were popular in the mid-20th century. They are made of colored and flavored food-grade paraffin wax, shaped into oversized, red lips. The wearer can hold the wax lips in front of their own lips, to give the appearance of wearing a large, colorful pair of lips.

History

Wax lips were first introduced in the 1940s by the American Candy Company. They were originally marketed as a fun, novelty item for children. The lips were often sold in novelty shops, candy stores, and at carnivals and fairs.

Production

The production of wax lips involves melting food-grade paraffin wax and adding color and flavor. The wax is then poured into molds shaped like oversized lips. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, the lips are removed from the molds and packaged for sale.

Popularity

Wax lips reached their peak popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. They were a common sight at Halloween parties and other festive occasions. Despite their popularity, wax lips were often criticized for their lack of taste and the fact that they were not actually edible.

Decline and Revival

By the 1970s, the popularity of wax lips began to decline. However, they have seen a resurgence in recent years as a nostalgic item. Many online retailers and specialty candy stores now sell wax lips, often marketing them as a retro or vintage candy.

In Popular Culture

Wax lips have made appearances in various forms of popular culture. They are often used as a comedic prop in movies and television shows. In literature, they are sometimes used as a symbol of childhood or nostalgia.
