Hilal Ahmar (also known as the Red Crescent) is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and education in countries where the social services sector is insufficient or non-existent. The Red Crescent is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world's largest humanitarian network.

History

The Red Crescent was established as a result of the Geneva Convention in 1864, which recognized the need for a neutral organization to provide care to wounded soldiers. The symbol of the Red Crescent was adopted in 1876 during the Russo-Turkish War by the Ottoman Empire, who felt that the Red Cross symbol was a reminder of the Crusader's cross and was therefore inappropriate.

Activities

The Red Crescent's activities include providing immediate response to emergencies, assisting in the recovery process after disasters, and promoting health and care in communities. It also works to prevent and respond to diseases, including epidemics, pandemics, and health emergencies.

Structure

The Red Crescent is made up of individual National Societies in each country. Each National Society works with its government and other humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to those in need. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) coordinates and supports the activities of the National Societies at an international level.

Challenges

The Red Crescent faces numerous challenges in its work, including political and cultural barriers, lack of resources, and the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters due to climate change.
