Red Cross

The Red Cross (pronunciation: /rɛd krɔːs/) is an international humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster preparedness education in communities worldwide.

Etymology

The name "Red Cross" is derived from the emblem used by the organization, a red cross on a white background, which is the inverse of the Swiss flag. The emblem was chosen in honor of Switzerland, where the first Geneva Convention was held, and because it is recognized as a symbol of neutrality and assistance.

History

The International Committee of the Red Cross was established in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, by Henry Dunant and Gustave Moynier. Its mission was to provide care for wounded soldiers, regardless of their nationality, in times of war. The organization has since expanded its services to include disaster relief and community services in peacetime.
