Empowerment is a multi-dimensional social process that helps people gain control over their own lives. It is a process that fosters power in people for use in their own lives, their communities and in their society, by acting on issues they define as important.

Definition

The term empowerment refers to measures designed to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in people and in communities in order to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority. It is the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights. Empowerment as action refers both to the process of self-empowerment and to professional support of people, which enables them to overcome their sense of powerlessness and lack of influence, and to recognize and use their resources.

Concept

The concept of empowerment is used in a wide range of contexts and disciplines, including psychology, education, social work, and public health. It is often associated with the idea of self-efficacy, or an individual's belief in their ability to achieve goals and effect change. Empowerment is also a key concept in the discourse on human rights and social justice, and it is often used in this context to describe processes of empowerment of marginalized groups, such as women, people of color, and the poor.

Empowerment in Healthcare

In the context of healthcare, empowerment refers to processes and conditions that increase individuals' control over their health and healthcare decisions. This can involve a range of strategies, including patient education, shared decision-making, and the promotion of self-management. Empowerment in healthcare is seen as a means of improving health outcomes and quality of life, as well as reducing healthcare costs.
