Neil Harbisson
Neil Harbisson (born 27 July 1982) is a British-Catalan contemporary artist and cyborg activist best known for being the first person in the world with an antenna implanted in his skull and for being officially recognized as a cyborg by a government. Harbisson was born with achromatopsia, a condition that causes complete color blindness. He is the co-founder of the Cyborg Foundation, an international organization that aims to help humans become cyborgs, defend cyborg rights, and promote cyborg art.
Early Life and Education
Harbisson was born in Mataró, Catalonia, Spain. He showed an early interest in the arts and music, studying at the Institut Alexandre Satorras and later at the Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England. His condition of achromatopsia meant that he could only see the world in shades of grey.
Cyborg Antenna
In 2004, Harbisson began developing an electronic eye, known as the eyeborg, which allows him to perceive colors through audible vibrations in his skull. The antenna is permanently attached to his head and has an internet connection, enabling him to receive colors from satellites and other external devices. The antenna also allows him to perceive infrared and ultraviolet light.
Cyborg Foundation
In 2010, Harbisson co-founded the Cyborg Foundation with Moon Ribas, a fellow cyborg artist. The foundation's mission is to assist people in becoming cyborgs, defend cyborg rights, and promote cyborg art. The foundation has been involved in various projects and initiatives to support the cyborg community and raise awareness about the integration of technology with the human body.
Recognition and Awards
Harbisson's work has been recognized internationally, and he has received several awards for his contributions to art and technology. He has been featured in numerous exhibitions, talks, and conferences around the world, including TED talks and United Nations events.
Personal Life
Harbisson continues to live and work in Barcelona, Spain. He remains an active advocate for cyborg rights and continues to explore the possibilities of human-technology integration through his art.
