== Gay Liberation Monument ==

The Gay Liberation Monument is a public artwork located in Christopher Park, part of the Greenwich Village neighborhood in New York City. The monument commemorates the Stonewall riots of 1969, a pivotal event in the LGBT rights movement.

History

The monument was created by American artist George Segal and was commissioned in 1979 by the Mildred Andrews Fund. It was completed in 1980 and installed in Christopher Park in 1992. The monument consists of four life-size bronze sculptures painted white, depicting two same-sex couples, one male and one female, in casual, affectionate poses.

Significance

The Gay Liberation Monument is significant as it represents the struggle for LGBT rights and commemorates the Stonewall riots, which are widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBT rights movement in the United States. The monument serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the progress that has been made since the riots.

Design

The design of the monument features four figures: two men standing and two women sitting. The figures are arranged in a way that suggests intimacy and companionship, reflecting the themes of love and solidarity within the LGBT community. The use of white paint on the bronze sculptures gives them a ghostly, ethereal quality, emphasizing the monument's commemorative purpose.

Location

Christopher Park, where the Gay Liberation Monument is located, is a small public park in Greenwich Village, near the site of the Stonewall Inn. The park has become a gathering place for the LGBT community and a site for various events and demonstrations related to LGBT rights.
