The University of Cambridge is a collegiate public research university in Cambridge, England. Founded in 1209, it is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's fourth-oldest surviving university. The university grew out of an association of scholars who left the University of Oxford after a dispute with the townspeople. The two "ancient universities" share many common features and are often referred to jointly as "Oxbridge".
History
The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209 by scholars who left Oxford after a dispute. The university received a royal charter from Henry III in 1231. Over the centuries, the university has grown to include 31 autonomous colleges and over 150 departments, faculties, and other institutions.
Colleges
The university is composed of 31 colleges, each with its own internal structure and activities. The oldest college is Peterhouse, founded in 1284, and the newest is Robinson College, established in 1977. Each college is an independent institution with its own property and income.
