Trichoadenoma

Trichoadenoma of Nikolowski

Trichoadenoma is a rare benign tumor of the skin that originates from the hair follicle. It is also known as "trichoadenoma of Nikolowski". This tumor is characterized by its slow growth and is typically found on the face or scalp.

Presentation

Trichoadenomas usually present as solitary, firm, skin-colored nodules. They are often asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during routine skin examinations. The lesions are typically small, measuring less than 1 cm in diameter.

Histopathology

Under the microscope, trichoadenomas exhibit well-circumscribed nodules in the dermis. They are composed of multiple cystic structures lined by epithelial cells that resemble the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. The cysts contain keratinous material, and the surrounding stroma is usually fibrous.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of trichoadenoma is primarily based on histological examination. A skin biopsy is performed to obtain a sample of the lesion, which is then analyzed under a microscope. The histological features are distinctive and help differentiate trichoadenoma from other similar lesions such as trichoepithelioma and trichofolliculoma.

Treatment

Treatment is generally not necessary for trichoadenomas unless they cause cosmetic concerns or discomfort. In such cases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. The prognosis is excellent, as these tumors do not have malignant potential.

Related conditions

Trichoadenoma should be distinguished from other follicular tumors such as:
