NBC News is the news division of the American broadcast television network NBC. The division operates under NBCUniversal News Group, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, which in turn is a subsidiary of Comcast. The group's various operations report to the president of NBC News, Noah Oppenheim.

NBC News aired the first, regularly scheduled news program in American broadcast television history on February 21, 1940. The group's broadcasts are produced and shown on the NBC network and include: NBC Nightly News, Today, Meet The Press, Dateline NBC, as well as the digital platforms and subsidiaries such as NBC News Digital, NBC News Radio, NBC News Mobile, and the network's 24-hour television news channels including MSNBC.

History

NBC News began on February 21, 1940, when NBC launched its first nightly news broadcast, NBC Newsreel, which was a play-by-play of the day's newsreels. In 1948, NBC launched its first morning news program, the Today show. It was the first show to be broadcast in color on a regular basis.

Programming

NBC News provides more than 30 hours of television news programming. The NBC Nightly News is the most watched news program in the United States, while the Today show serves as the division's morning news program. The Sunday morning program Meet The Press is the longest-running television series in American broadcasting history, debuting in 1947.

Digital platforms

In addition to its main website, NBC News Digital includes NBCNews.com, MSNBC.com, Today.com, NBCBLK, NBC Latino, NBC OUT, Channel One News, and Stay Tuned, the news division's Snapchat news show.

Notable personalities

Notable NBC News personalities include Lester Holt (anchor of NBC Nightly News), Savannah Guthrie (co-anchor of Today), Chuck Todd (moderator of Meet The Press), and Rachel Maddow (host of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC).

Criticism and controversies

NBC News has been the subject of some controversies, such as the editing of the George Zimmerman 911 call, the Brian Williams scandal, and the firing of Today show host Matt Lauer.
