Wafik El-Deiry

Wafik El-Deiry is an American oncologist and scientist known for his contributions to the field of cancer research. He is currently the Deputy Cancer Center Director for Translational Research, the William Wikoff Smith Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, co-Leader of the Molecular Therapeutics Program, and Professor at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Early Life and Education

El-Deiry was born in Cairo, Egypt and moved to the United States at a young age. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami and went on to earn his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Career

El-Deiry began his career at the University of Pennsylvania where he served as the Associate Director for Translational Research and the Program Leader of the Radiobiology and Imaging Program at the Abramson Cancer Center. He later moved to the Penn State College of Medicine where he was the Rose Dunlap Division Chair for Hematology/Oncology, the Director of the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, and the Associate Dean for Oncology Research.

In 2015, El-Deiry joined the Fox Chase Cancer Center where he currently holds several leadership positions. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of tumor cell death and survival, with the goal of developing more effective treatments for cancer.

Research

El-Deiry's research has led to the discovery of several important cancer-related genes, including p21, a tumor suppressor gene that is often mutated in human cancers. His work has also contributed to the development of new cancer drugs, including ONC201, a first-in-class small molecule that is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of various types of cancer.

Awards and Honors

Throughout his career, El-Deiry has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to cancer research, including the American Cancer Society Research Professorship, the National Cancer Institute MERIT Award, and the American Association for Cancer Research Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research.
