Undecanoic acid is a saturated fatty acid that naturally occurs in various animal fats and oils. It is a colorless oil that is sparingly soluble in water, but well soluble in alcohol and ether. The chemical formula for undecanoic acid is C11H22O2.

Chemical Properties[edit]

Undecanoic acid, also known as hendecanoic acid, is a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) that is used in the preparation of esters for perfumes and synthetic flavors. It has a molar mass of 186.29 g/mol and a density of 0.893 g/cm³. The acid is a clear, colorless liquid at room temperature and has a slightly unpleasant odor.

Production[edit]

Undecanoic acid can be produced by the oxidation of 1-decanol, undecanal, or undecane. It can also be prepared from castor oil by cracking it.

Uses[edit]

Undecanoic acid is used in the preparation of esters that are used in perfumes and artificial flavorings. It is also used in the manufacture of lubricants, greases, rubber, and dyes. In medicine, undecanoic acid is used as a fungicide and in the treatment of certain skin diseases.

Health Effects[edit]

Undecanoic acid is not considered to be a hazardous substance. However, it can cause irritation to the skin and eyes, and may be harmful if swallowed or inhaled in large amounts.
