CDH6 or Cadherin 6 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CDH6 gene. Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types. CDH6 is expressed in some normal epithelial tissues and in some carcinoma cell lines.

Function[edit]

The CDH6 gene encodes a type 2 classical cadherin from the cadherin superfamily, integral membrane proteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Mature cadherin proteins are composed of a large N-terminal extracellular domain, a single membrane-spanning domain, and a small, highly conserved C-terminal cytoplasmic domain. Type 2 (atypical) cadherins are defined based on their lack of a HAV cell adhesion recognition sequence specific to type 1 (classical) cadherins.

Clinical significance[edit]

Expression of this particular cadherin in oncogenic transformed cells suggests a role in tumorigenesis.
