ATC code R is a section of the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC), a system used for the classification of drugs and other medical products. The ATC system is controlled by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is used globally to ensure the consistent classification of medications.
Structure of ATC code R
The ATC code R is designated for drugs that act on the respiratory system. This category includes medications used to treat conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cough, and allergic rhinitis.
The ATC code R is divided into several subgroups, each representing a different class of respiratory medications:
- R01 - Nasal preparations
- R02 - Throat preparations
- R03 - Drugs for obstructive airway diseases
- R05 - Cough and cold preparations
- R06 - Antihistamines for systemic use
- R07 - Other respiratory system products
Subgroups of ATC code R
R01 - Nasal preparations
This subgroup includes medications used for the treatment of nasal conditions such as nasal congestion and allergic rhinitis. Examples include nasal decongestants and nasal corticosteroids.
R02 - Throat preparations
This subgroup includes medications used for the treatment of throat conditions such as sore throat and pharyngitis. Examples include throat lozenges and antiseptic gargles.
R03 - Drugs for obstructive airway diseases
This subgroup includes medications used for the treatment of obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and COPD. Examples include bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and leukotriene receptor antagonists.
R05 - Cough and cold preparations
This subgroup includes medications used for the treatment of cough and cold symptoms. Examples include expectorants, antitussives, and mucolytics.
R06 - Antihistamines for systemic use
This subgroup includes medications used for the treatment of allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis and urticaria. Examples include first-generation and second-generation antihistamines.
R07 - Other respiratory system products
This subgroup includes other medications used for the treatment of respiratory conditions that do not fall into the above categories. Examples include respiratory stimulants and oxygen therapy.
