Banten is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the western tip of the island of Java. Banten is bordered by Jakarta to the east, West Java to the south and the Java Sea to the north. The province has a population of over 11 million people and covers an area of 9,662.92 square kilometers.

Banten was part of the Sunda Kingdom until the 16th century when it became an independent sultanate. The Banten Sultanate was a major seaport and traded with countries as far away as China and India. The sultanate was eventually absorbed into the Dutch East Indies in the 19th century.
