Western Australia

Western Australia is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, and the Southern Ocean to the south, the Northern Territory to the north-east, and South Australia to the south-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state, with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia's Sakha Republic.

History

The first inhabitants of Western Australia were the Aboriginal Australians, who have lived there for tens of thousands of years. The first European to visit Western Australia was the Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog in 1616. The British established a colony at Perth in 1829, and the state was officially proclaimed in 1890.

Geography

Western Australia is known for its vast and diverse landscapes. It is home to the Kimberley, one of the world's last great wilderness areas, and the Nullarbor Plain, the world's largest single exposure of limestone bedrock.
