Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It was founded in 1876 and named after its first benefactor, the American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins. The university is often cited as the first research university in the United States.

History

The university was founded using a $7 million bequest—then the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the U.S.—from Johns Hopkins. He wished for the establishment of a hospital and university, both of which would bear his name. The university was incorporated on February 22, 1876.

Johns Hopkins University is renowned for its programs in the fields of Public Health, Biomedical Engineering, International Relations, and Neuroscience. The university follows a semester-based academic calendar and has a student-faculty ratio of 7:1.

Campuses

The university's main campus, Homewood, is located in Baltimore's Charles Village neighborhood. The university also has other campuses in Maryland, Washington D.C., Italy, China, and Singapore.

Notable Alumni

Johns Hopkins University has produced many notable alumni, including 39 Nobel laureates. Some of the notable alumni include Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, and John Dewey, an influential philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer.
