General Foods

General Foods is a defunct company that was established in the United States and was one of the pioneers in the food processing industry. It was founded in 1922 by Clarence Birdseye, an American inventor, entrepreneur, and naturalist, and was later acquired by Philip Morris Companies in 1985.

History

General Foods was originally known as the Postum Cereal Company, which was established by C. W. Post in 1895. The company was renamed to General Foods in 1929 after acquiring several other food companies.

Products

General Foods produced a wide range of food products, including breakfast cereals, frozen foods, baking products, coffee, meats, and desserts. Some of its most popular brands included Post Cereals, Birds Eye, and Maxwell House.

Acquisition and Merger

In 1985, General Foods was acquired by Philip Morris Companies, a tobacco and food conglomerate. In 1989, Philip Morris Companies merged General Foods with Kraft Foods to form Kraft General Foods, which was later renamed to Kraft Foods Inc. in 1995.

Legacy

Despite its dissolution, the legacy of General Foods continues to live on through its brands, many of which are still popular today. The company's pioneering role in the food processing industry also had a significant impact on the way food is produced and consumed today.
