The term "frozen food" is a compound noun formed from the past participle of the verb "freeze" and the noun "food". The verb "freeze" comes from the Old English "frēosan", which means "to turn to ice", and the noun "food" comes from the Old English "fōda", which means "nourishment".
History
The practice of freezing food for preservation isn't new. It dates back to the times of the ancient Romans and Chinese who stored their food in snow and ice. However, the modern frozen food industry was developed by Clarence Birdseye who invented the quick freezing method in the 1920s.
