Flumazenil is a benzodiazepine antagonist used to counteract the effects of benzodiazepines, which are commonly used for anxiety, insomnia, and seizure disorders. It is a specific antidote for the reversal of benzodiazepine-induced CNS depression.

By blocking the effect of benzodiazepines, flumazenil reverses their CNS depressant effects.

Flumazenil is characterized by rapid onset and short duration of action. It is metabolized in the liver and excreted primarily in the urine. The half-life of flumazenil is approximately 40-80 minutes, which may necessitate multiple doses in cases of severe benzodiazepine overdose.
