Frederick County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,419. Its county seat is Winchester. The county was formed in 1743 from parts of Orange County and named after Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King George II of Great Britain.

Frederick County was established in 1743. It was named after Frederick, Prince of Wales, the son of King George II. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, with several battles occurring within its borders, including the Battle of Kernstown and the Battle of Cedar Creek.

Geography[edit]

Frederick County is located in the northern part of Virginia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 416 square miles, of which 414 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water. The county is part of the Shenandoah Valley region.

As of the 2020 census, there were 91,419 people, 34,401 households, and 24,676 families residing in the county. The population density was 221 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Asian, and other races.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Frederick County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and retail. The county is known for its apple orchards and is a major producer of apples in Virginia. Additionally, the presence of several industrial parks has attracted various manufacturing businesses to the area.

Education[edit]

Frederick County Public Schools operates the public school system in the county. The county is also home to several private schools and is in close proximity to Shenandoah University in Winchester.

Transportation[edit]

Major highways that run through Frederick County include Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11, and U.S. Route 50. The county is also served by the Winchester Regional Airport.
