New Jersey is a U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by the state of New York; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and on the southwest by Delaware Bay and the State of Delaware.
History
New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements in the state. The English later seized control of the region, naming it the Province of New Jersey after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey, and granting it as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton.
Geography
New Jersey is bordered on the north and northeast by New York; on the east by the Atlantic Ocean; on the south by the Delaware Bay and Delaware; and on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area but the 11th-most populous, with 9 million residents as of 2017, making it the most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states.
Economy
New Jersey's economy is multifaceted, but is centered on the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, information technology, the financial industry, chemical development, telecommunications, food processing, electric equipment, printing, publishing, and tourism.
Demographics
As of 2019, New Jersey was the eleventh-most populous state in the United States, and the most densely populated, with a population of 8,882,190 residents. The racial makeup of the state was 68.1% White, 13.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 6.4% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races.
Education
New Jersey's public school system consistently ranks at or near the top among all fifty U.S. states.
Transportation
New Jersey has a robust network of roads, including several major highways, and a mass transit system that includes buses, trains, and ferries.
Government and politics
New Jersey is a Democratic stronghold, with the party holding a majority of the seats in both the State Assembly and New Jersey Senate.
Culture
New Jersey is known for its diverse culture, with influences from a variety of ethnic groups.
