Anopheles dirus is a species of mosquito in the genus Anopheles. It is one of the primary vectors for the transmission of malaria in Southeast Asia.
Taxonomy[edit]
The Anopheles dirus species complex is part of the Leucosphyrus Group, which includes some of the most important malaria vectors in Asia. The complex includes seven sibling species, identified as species A through G. Anopheles dirus itself is also known as species A.
Distribution and Habitat[edit]
Anopheles dirus is found throughout Southeast Asia, including in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. It prefers forested areas and breeds in small, temporary, sunlit pools of water.
Role in Malaria Transmission[edit]
Anopheles dirus is a highly efficient vector for the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes the most severe form of malaria. Its efficiency is due to its high susceptibility to infection by the parasite and its tendency to bite humans.
Control Measures[edit]
Control measures for Anopheles dirus include the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor residual spraying, and larval control. However, the species' forested habitat and early biting habits can make these measures less effective.
