Public university system in California, United States
The University of California (UC) is a public university system in the U.S. state of California. The system is composed of ten campuses, a combined student body of over 280,000 students, 227,000 faculty and staff, and over 2.0 million living alumni. Its first campus, UC Berkeley, was founded in 1868, while the newest campus, UC Merced, opened in 2005. The University of California is governed by a 26-member Board of Regents.
History
The University of California was established in 1868, following the Morrill Act of 1862, which provided federal land to states to finance higher education. The first campus, UC Berkeley, was established in the city of Berkeley. The university expanded rapidly in the 20th century, adding campuses in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Davis, among others.
